Unfortunately, this rich repository of knowledge was lost when the university was destroyed by Bakhtiyar Khilji’s army in the late 12th century.

Destruction and Decline:

Nalanda University faced its downfall in the 12th century when it was attacked and destroyed by Bakhtiyar Khilji, a Turkic invader. The university, which once thrived with intellectual energy and scholarly pursuits, was reduced to ruins. The library was set on fire, and it is said that the flames from the burning manuscripts continued for months. This marked the end of one of the world’s greatest centers of learning.

In recent years, the Indian government, along with international collaboration, has undertaken steps to revive the spirit of Nalanda University. The modern Nalanda University, re-established in 2014 near the ancient site, seeks to rekindle the intellectual fire of its predecessor. The new Nalanda University focuses on interdisciplinary research and international cooperation, with courses in history, ecology, environmental studies, and Buddhist studies. The university attracts students and scholars from across the globe, keeping alive Nalanda’s legacy as a beacon of knowledge.
