Historical Background

Lakshadweep, meaning "a hundred thousand islands," has a rich history of maritime trade, cultural exchanges, and colonization. The islands were known to ancient sailors and traders from the Middle East, and their strategic location made them part of the ancient spice trade routes. The Minicoy Islanders have a distinct culture influenced by the Maldives due to their proximity. Historically, the islands were governed by local rulers before coming under British control and later joining the Republic of India.
