Historical Background

Ladakh has a rich history influenced by Tibetan Buddhism and early Himalayan kingdoms. The region has been a strategic crossroad for trade routes between India and Central Asia. Its monasteries, such as Hemis and Thiksey, date back to the 11th century and are key centers of Buddhist learning and culture. Leh Palace, built in the 17th century, was once the royal residence of the Namgyal dynasty, reflecting the grandeur of Ladakh's ancient past.
